Financial Help for the Disabled

Did you know that there are a whole range of government schemes and incentives to make purchasing essential mobility equipment more affordable?

In this blog we aim to point out a few of these schemes and give you advice and pointers on who to contact to make the most of them.

Personal Independence Payment (PIP)

Personal Independence Payment (PIP) helps with some of the extra costs caused by long-term ill-health or a disability if you’re aged 16 to 64.

You could get between £21.55 and £138.05 a week.

The rate depends on how your condition affects you, not the condition itself.

You’ll need an assessment to work out the level of help you get. Your award will be regularly reassessed to make sure you’re getting the right support.

You can find out more about whether you are eligible for the PIP here.

Benefits Calculator

Working out what you are entitled to can be a bit daunting. There seem to be lots of criteria and lots of questions and this can put quite a few people off. So, you may be missing out on the benefits that are rightly yours.

There is a very handy online calculator we have come across that will help you find out what you are entitled to. It can be accessed here. Just follow through the sections and fill out the information.

There is also a lot of information available at the Citizens Advice bureau here.

VAT Relief

When buying mobility products, many people are not aware that they may be able to buy the product without VAT. With VAT at 20%, this can make quite a difference when purchasing an expensive item such as a mobility scooter.

For example, a £1200 mobility scooter would without vat would be £1000. A £200 saving for filling in the right information and knowing you are entitled to VAT relief.

Below are some examples of products that can qualify for VAT relief:

  • adjustable beds
  • stair lifts
  • wheelchairs / electric wheelchairs
  • medical appliances to help with severe injuries
  • alarms
  • braille paper or low vision aids – but not spectacles or contact lenses
  • mobility scooters
  • motor vehicles
  • building work like access ramps, widening doors, installing a lift or toilet

If you are disabled or have a long term illness, then you can qualify for VAT relief on any of Pro Rider Mobility’s products.
